ISKID supported the program by participating in the Cool Up Program, which is a part of the InternationalClimate Initiative (IKI), with its consultant status. Cool Up aims to support the transition of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, which are the program's participating countries, to the sustainable cooling process.
Through their responses to the program's survey on cooling technologies and the use of natural refrigerants, including the industry and usage habits in Turkey, ISKID member industry experts provided the data that the program needed. The energy demand in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is expected to increase by 50% by 2040 due to climate change, rapidly increasing population, urbanization and higher living standards.
Cooling represents a large part of energy consumption, and many existing devices also use technologies with low energy efficiency and refrigerants with high global warming potential. To overcome these problems and mitigate climate change, Cool Up promotes accelerated technological change and the early implementation of the Kigali Amendment, the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Agreement in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Cool Up is run by the German consulting company Guidehouse in collaboration with national partners, including UNDP. For 2023, more thorough investigations are planned in the following areas: industrial studies-policy development, national cooling action plan, demo projects, capacity building trainings, thematic workshops, COP and MOP events, and visibility studies. ISKID's industry expertise and vision in Turkey are expected to benefit the program's relevant areas.
